Playing Neverwinter
Raff, Milo and Gabriel have been enjoying the new game Neverwinter – an MMORPG that has recently launched. The boys and I love playing video games together, and I have set up my study so that we can all sit together with our computers on one long desk that wraps around the (fairly small) room. It’s a squash and a squeeze, but we have fun!
As of 2024, Neverwinter has been around for over a decade, which feels like an eternity in the ever-evolving world of MMORPGs. Launched in 2013 for PC, with console ports arriving a couple of years later, this free-to-play game whisked players away to the Forgotten Realms, a popular Dungeons & Dragons setting. Let's take a quick trip down memory lane and see what makes Neverwinter tick.
The game throws you right into the action, starting with the destruction of Neverwinter itself. It's up to you, a brave adventurer, to fight back the forces of evil and reclaim the city. The story unfolds through quests that range from simple monster bashing to more intricate dungeon crawls. While the narrative might not win awards for originality, it provides a solid foundation for the world and its characters, especially for those familiar with the Forgotten Realms lore.
One of Neverwinter's biggest strengths is its combat system. It's action-oriented and requires you to stay on your toes, dodging attacks and stringing together combos to maximise damage. It's a refreshing change from the click-and-wait style of combat found in many other MMOs.
Another big draw is character creation. Neverwinter offers a lot of flexibility, letting you pick from various races (human, elf, dwarf, and even more exotic choices) and classes (fighters, rogues, wizards, the usual D&D suspects). You can spend hours tweaking your character's appearance to look exactly how you envision them battling through hordes of goblins.
The game constantly expands with new content updates. New zones, dungeons, campaigns, and even playable classes are regularly added, keeping things fresh for veterans. Whether you crave challenging endgame raids or prefer to team up with friends for casual questing, Neverwinter caters to various playstyles.
Now, Neverwinter isn't without its flaws. As a free-to-play title, it utilises microtransactions to give players an edge. While it's certainly possible to have a good time without spending a dime, those who invest real money can progress faster and acquire powerful gear more easily. This can be a point of contention for some players, but it's a common theme in the free-to-play space.
Overall, Neverwinter remains a solid choice for anyone looking for a fun and action-packed online adventure in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Whether you're a seasoned MMO veteran or a curious newcomer, Neverwinter offers a world to explore, monsters to slay and loot to hoard. So, what are you waiting for? Jump in and experience the Forgotten Realms for yourself!
