Clifton Locks
We’re up in Bristol this weekend visiting our son Monty, who is working here this year. The Clifton suspension bridge is always worth a visit, even on a grey murky day, and today I noticed these lovelocks on a fence overlooking the Avon Gorge.
The bridge was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completed in 1864. The bridge is 419 feet (128 m) long and is made of wrought iron. It is a Grade I listed building and a famous landmark of Bristol. The idea of building a bridge at this location originated in 1753. There were many challenges and competitions throughout the years for the design and funding. The initial plan was for a stone bridge but due to cost, a wrought iron suspension bridge was built instead.
The bridge is owned by a charitable trust and the income from tolls is used to pay for its maintenance. The bridge is a popular tourist destination and has been used as a backdrop in many films and television programs.
