Catching Fish & Dogs
Ballyconnell, Cavan, Ireland, July 2016
We’re on holiday in Ireland again, with our old friends Mat & Ruth and their family. We regularly return to County Cavan, where Vanessa’s mum grew up, and the boys have at least twenty cousins, uncles, and aunts who all live within a few miles. We are staying in lovely log cabins in a forest, not far from Ballyconnell and Belturbet - perfect for mellow evenings around the barbecue. There is a small marina on the River Erne, where we took the children fishing on the first day. This did not go as planned - Dash caught a tiny fish by hand (which the kids are looking at in this photograph) but apart from that, the only thing accidentally hooked was our long-suffering chihuahua Daisy. Fortunately, this only resulted in a slight scratch to her foot, but she was quite disgruntled about the whole thing…
Ballyconnell Log Cabins are located in the Irish Lake District on the Leitrim / Cavan border, set in a wonderful mature pine forest on the banks of the Woodford River about 7km south of Ballyconnell. The peaceful forest is great for children to explore and make less peaceful. The area enjoys fantastic nearby amenities for angling, walking, adventuring, caving, boating, horse riding and many other outdoor pursuits. Follow the N3 from Dublin via Navan, Kells and Cavan Town to Belturbet, then take the N87 to Ballyconnell. In Ballyconnell turn left on the R199 to Killeshandra / Carrigallen for 6km until a sign to "Lock 3". Turn right here and follow down the road to the first right, turn right here and continue over a few speed bumps to the gate of the complex.
