Drinking Raindrops

Aldenham School, Borehamwood, July 2013

We had a wonderful day today - my cousin Maria and her fiance Mark were married in a lovely ceremony at Aldenham School, near Borehamwood. It’s a great venue with a beautiful oak-panelled hall and immaculate gardens for photographs afterwards. Later we drove a mile or two up the road for the reception at a local farm, which had been turned into a miniature Glastonbury for the event. Without the mud.

The weather was perfect - sunny for the ceremony, and later when it was time to sit down in the marquee, the rains came to cool everything down… otherwise I think we would have broiled. I was lucky enough to catch Dash trying to drink from the stream of raindrops at the entrance to one of the marquees.

Now I’m not a professional wedding photographer and certainly never seek to do weddings, but I did shoot this one as a favour – part of a big family effort to help out with various aspects of the wedding, such as music and catering, by way of saving money for the couple. There was no plan to hire a wedding photographer at all, so I did not feel quite so guilty that I was doing somebody out of a job. It was a slightly daunting but very enjoyable exercise and fortunately, the results did not disappoint. There is a steep learning curve, to say the least, and it does make me take my hat off to the real pros who make their living this way.
