Wet Feet

Westbere, October 2015

It’s been a cool and overcast Sunday morning, but we took the dogs out for a walk in Westbere by the lakes. This is apparently a pretty popular fishing spot, and there are a lot of small jetties along the edge of the lake, but they are rarely occupied whenever we are there. Dash has a knack for ending up in any nearby body of water, and Westbere was no different - he soon had wellie boots full of muddy water, as you can see here. Another detail I completely failed to spot until Vanessa pointed it out to me a few years later is that Dash had drawn all over his eyebrows with a marker pen, hence the slightly odd look to this image!

Today's route lies along the Westbere Lakes circular walk, a scenic escape outside Canterbury. This easy 5.6-kilometre loop trail is perfect for a family outing, a walk with your furry friend, or a solo adventure to reconnect with nature. Allow yourself roughly 90 minutes to complete the gentle circuit, taking in the beauty of the lake and its surroundings.

Westbere Lakes themselves are a photographer's paradise. Keep your camera handy to capture the tranquil water reflecting the sky, the vibrant birdlife flitting through the trees, or even your dog enjoying a splash (remember, some areas require dogs to be on a lead).

The trail is considered easy terrain, making it a great choice for walkers of all abilities. Birdwatchers will delight in the diverse species that call the lake home, while runners can enjoy a scenic jog along the path.

While there's no dedicated car park, on-street parking is available in Westbere. For the most convenient access, however, you could start your walk from the charming village of Fordwich. From there, you can easily join the well-marked trail and begin your exploration of this delightful corner of the Kent countryside.

Remember to wear proper footwear, especially after rainfall when the paths become muddy. With its easy access, beautiful scenery, and abundant wildlife, the Westbere Lakes circular walk offers a refreshing escape for anyone seeking a break from the hustle and bustle.
