Agfamatic 901 Motor
There are some cameras you remember less for what they did than for how they looked, and how they looked when you held them at thirteen. The Agfamatic 901 Motor is one of those cameras. It is a small, flat, almost-black plastic brick with a vivid orange button on top, a 110-film cartridge slot in the back, and a tiny micro-motor inside that buzzed and whirred whenever you took a picture.
In 1982, in Dubai, when my parents gave me one as a thirteenth-birthday present to replace the elderly Halina Paulette that had been my first camera, it seemed like the most modern object I had ever owned. It was about the size of a Marlboro packet, made entirely of black injection-moulded plastic, and made satisfying mechanical noises when you used it. There were no controls to speak of — drop in the cartridge, point, press the orange button — and it gave back square-ish little colour prints from the local chemist that I thought, at the time, were genuinely the future of photography.
In fairness to my thirteen-year-old self, that was actually a perfectly reasonable thing to think in 1982. The 110 cartridge format was at the peak of its consumer popularity, the Pocket Instamatic and its many imitators had sold many tens of millions of units across the previous decade, and the Agfamatic 901 — released by Agfa in 1979 and built until 1981 — was very much the German contribution to that boom. It is, in retrospect, a slightly stranger camera than it looked at the time: a fully-mechanised, motor-driven 110 pocket camera with a three-element coated glass lens, made by a serious German optics firm in their Berlin factory, and sold across Europe for not very much money to children, holidaymakers and the general snapshot-taking public (L'Atelier de JP).
A short history of the Agfamatic Pocket
To understand the 901 you have to first understand what Agfa had been doing for the previous six years. The Agfamatic Pocket range began in 1973 as Agfa's response to Kodak's enormously successful Pocket Instamatic, which had launched the 110 cartridge format a year earlier. The 110 format itself was a Kodak invention from 1972 — a tiny drop-in plastic cartridge containing a 16mm-wide film strip producing nominal 13×17mm negatives, designed so that loading and unloading was foolproof, and so that the cameras themselves could be small enough to fit a jacket pocket. Kodak's own Pocket Instamatic series sold over 25 million units in its first three years on the market, which is the kind of figure that gets the attention of every other camera manufacturer in the world (Wikipedia).
Agfa's response was thoughtful. Rather than simply producing a Kodak clone, they commissioned the Munich industrial design firm Schlagheck Schultes Design (the partnership of Professor Norbert Schlagheck and Herbert Schultes) to design an entire family of 110 cameras from the ground up, and gave them a brief that prioritised tactile quality, distinctive industrial design, and a single instantly-recognisable visual feature that would make Agfamatic cameras identifiable across a shop window at twenty paces. The result, in 1973, was the original Agfamatic 2000 Pocket — a small slab of brushed aluminium and black plastic, vaguely inspired by the Minox B and C miniature cameras, with a mechanical pull-out advance mechanism that you operated by pushing the front section of the camera in and pulling it out again.
Each push-pull cocked the shutter, advanced the film one frame, and protected the lens and viewfinder when the camera was closed. The noise this mechanism made — a sharp metallic "ritsch-ratsch-klick" — was so distinctive that the entire Agfamatic Pocket line was nicknamed "Ritsch-Ratsch-Kameras" in Germany for the rest of its production life, and "Repitomatic" in France (YouTube).
And of course there was the orange button. Schlagheck and Schultes had decided early on that the shutter release was going to be the single corporate-design element that defined every Agfamatic, regardless of what model number sat on the front, and they specified it with the kind of obsessive precision that good industrial designers reserve for the parts of a product the user actually touches. It was 16 millimetres in diameter, made of soft injection-moulded orange plastic, sat in a 0.7-millimetre-high chrome-plated brass collar that guided the fingertip to the centre, had a stroke of less than 0.5 millimetres, and required exactly 300 grams of pressure to actuate.
The whole assembly was designed to minimise camera shake by allowing the photographer to release the shutter with such a gentle touch that the body of the camera barely moved. Agfa filed the corresponding patent in Germany in 1968 (published 1970 as DE 1622174) and in the United States in 1972 (published 1976 as US 3,950,773), under the slightly anonymous title "Operating means for Photographic Cameras".
Agfa called this button the Sensor, and the marketing department turned it into the centrepiece of their advertising for the next decade. They were so insistent on it, in fact, that there's a wonderful story Schlagheck's son Julian tells in a 2016 interview: at one early product-review meeting, the Agfa board apparently couldn't be persuaded that the orange disc needed to be quite so prominent or quite so brightly coloured. Schlagheck Sr. demonstrated the importance of the design feature by physically throwing one of the prototype cameras across the conference room. The board, in due course, approved the design.
The Agfamatic Pocket line proliferated rapidly through the mid-1970s. The 2000 was followed by the 3000 (1974, with weather-symbol aperture selection), the 4000 (1974, electronic shutter with speeds from 1/250 to 30 seconds, a faster Color Apotar lens, and pictogram-based focus zones), the Optima 5000 (1974, an aluminium-bodied luxury version with a longer pull-out section), and the Optima 6000 makro Pocket (1975, with close-up focusing down to 25 centimetres and a self-timer).
In 1976, when the flash market shifted away from the rotating Magicube to the linear Flipflash, Agfa quietly refreshed the entire range with new flash sockets and renamed everything with an "08" suffix: 2008, 3008, 4008, 6008, and so on (apphotnum). All of these cameras used essentially the same mechanical platform, the same Sensor button, the same characteristic ritsch-ratsch-klick cocking action, and the same broad design language.
By the time the 901 arrived in 1979, the Agfamatic Pocket was the best-selling family of European 110 cameras and possibly the best-known piece of German industrial design that any thirteen-year-old at the time could actually own.
What changed for the 901: motorisation
The 901 series, when it appeared in 1979, was a deliberate departure from everything the earlier Agfamatic Pockets had been. Schlagheck Schultes had been retained to design it, the orange Sensor button was kept (along with the Agfamatic name on the front and the family tradition of a tripod-socket-cum-strap-mount on the bottom), but almost everything else was changed.
The Minox-style pull-out body, with its mechanical advance mechanism and characteristic noise, was gone — replaced by a fixed rigid body and an electric micro-motor that wound the film, cocked the shutter, and opened the lens cover automatically every time the shutter fired. The brushed-aluminium and black-plastic of the earlier models was gone too — replaced by a single moulding of glossy black plastic with the Sensor button as the only colour accent.
The whole camera was smaller, lighter, and very much more obviously a product of the late 1970s than the gently retro-futurist look of the original 2000. The 901 E was first shown at Photokina 1978, and is generally credited as the world's first 110 pocket camera with an integrated micro-motor for film advance.
The design itself was sufficiently distinctive to win Schlagheck Schultes an iF Design Award in 1979 — the German industrial design industry's most prestigious annual prize, judged in Hannover, and at the time roughly equivalent in seriousness to a small Pritzker for product design (35mmc). Whether the 901 was actually the most rational possible camera to win the award is debatable — by any honest reckoning, a motor-driven 110 pocket camera is overkill, since the manual pull-out advance of the earlier Agfamatics worked perfectly well and didn't require batteries — but the design itself, considered as an object, is a small piece of late-1970s consumer-product design that still looks confident and modern more than four decades later.
The 901 was sold in four sub-variants, which between them spanned the entire spread from "barest possible motorised pocket camera" to "fully-automatic top-of-the-line Agfa flagship 110." Working from base to top of the range:
Agfamatic 901 Motor — the base model, which is the one I owned. No exposure-meter cell. No continuous shooting. Two shutter speeds (1/50 and 1/100 second), selected by a weather-symbol slider on top of the camera (sun / cloud). Fixed-focus 27mm f/6.3 three-element Color Apotar lens. Flipflash socket for the cheap disposable flash sticks, plus a side-mounting connector for Agfa's proprietary Lux 901 electronic flash unit. Two AAA batteries powered the motor.
Agfamatic 901 S Motor — added continuous-shooting capability (the motor would fire and advance repeatedly while you held the Sensor button down) and four exposure settings rather than two, but still no built-in light meter.
Agfamatic 901 E Motor — added a CdS exposure-meter cell with a slider on top that the user moved until a pair of opposed LED arrowheads in the viewfinder lined up. This gave you semi-automatic exposure across what was effectively an aperture-priority range (the lens iris and the meter window were ganged to the slider), with the camera selecting one of three shutter speeds (1/50, 1/125, 1/200 sec) to match. This was the variant first announced at Photokina 1978 (Wikibooks).
Agfamatic 901 SE Motor — the top of the range, with CdS meter and fully automatic exposure, no user input required beyond loading the film and pressing the Sensor.
All four variants used the same body, the same Color Apotar lens, the same micro-motor, and the same orange Sensor button. The base 901 Motor — my one — was the simplest of the four, and the one most likely to end up in a child's birthday box-set in 1982. It weighed about 149 grams without batteries, measured 125 × 53 × 30 millimetres (slightly smaller than a packet of cigarettes), and ran on two ordinary AAA cells which lasted long enough for plenty of holiday and family snapshots before they needed replacing.
The Color Apotar lens deserves a brief mention. It was a three-element coated-glass design with a fixed maximum aperture of f/6.3 (which on the base 901 Motor was also the only aperture, since the camera had no iris), a focal length of 27mm (which on the tiny 13×17mm 110 negative is equivalent in field-of-view to roughly a 55mm normal lens on full-frame 35mm), and a fixed focus range that ran from about 1.2 metres to infinity (Etsy listing).
This was a notch below the four-element Lanthar designs Voigtländer used in their Vitoret 110 EL, and a notch above the simpler one- and two-element lenses Kodak fitted to the cheapest Pocket Instamatics, but in absolute terms it was a competent piece of optical engineering — the kind of lens that produces sharp, contrasty, well-corrected images when the light is good, and which simply doesn't have the negative size on its side when the light isn't.
The controls for the Agfamatic 901 Motor base model could hardly be much simpler. The narrow front of the camera bears the small rectangular opening for the Color Apotar lens recessed in the body of the camera, and usually concealed by a sliding cover that opens automatically. To the right is the viewfinder, and apart from the Agfamatic 901 Motor lettering and the Agfa logo, there’s nothing else on the front surface. The top of the camera is dominated by the bright orange shutter release button in its chrome surround. There’s also a small round window showing the frame count, and just behind that, the sliding control switch which turns the camera on and selects one of the two shutter speeds with cloud and sun symbols.
The back of the camera has the viewfinder window to the left, within a sliding panel that both releases the film door, and if you slide it further, reveals the 2 AAA batteries that power the camera. The film door has a window to view what type of 110 film cartridge you have loaded. On the left edge of the camera is the threaded screw mount for the camera strap, and on the right end, the mounting socket and release button for the Lux 901 flash.
The Lux 901 flash
My birthday box-set in 1982 included not only the camera but the Agfamatic Lux 901, Agfa's proprietary electronic flash unit designed specifically to clip onto the right-hand side of the 901-series body. It was a small black plastic accessory roughly the size of a matchbox, ran on its own pair of AA cells (independent of the camera's batteries), connected via a slide-in proprietary connector on the camera's right edge that combined mechanical mounting and electrical sync, and gave a flash recycle time of approximately six seconds between exposures (Museum Digital).
The Lux 901 was, frankly, a much more practical accessory than the standard Flipflash sticks the camera also accepted. A Flipflash unit was a vertical row of eight or ten single-use disposable flashbulbs encased in a plastic strip, sold as a consumable in chemist's shops, and was the cheapest possible flash solution for a 110 camera — but you were paying perhaps a few pence per shot for every flash photograph, and the camera position relative to the flash was fixed by where the Flipflash socket was on the top of the body.
The Lux 901, by contrast, was reusable indefinitely on its own batteries, gave a more powerful and more even light than a Flipflash bulb, and sat to one side of the camera so that the flash light came from a slightly different angle than the lens axis — which gives noticeably less red-eye and noticeably better modelling on faces. For a thirteen-year-old shooting birthday parties and indoor family scenes, it was the difference between flash photography that worked properly and flash photography that mostly didn't.
The flash unit also has the small distinction of having been included in the original Berlin Science Museum acquisition of an Agfa 901 E in 1978, which suggests Agfa thought of it as the proper companion to the camera rather than as an optional extra (Science Museum Group). Mine spent the next several years bolted permanently to the side of the 901 Motor in its box, and I have a clear memory of the satisfying mechanical click as the connector engaged and the slightly nervous wait of the recycle time between shots at any indoor gathering.
What it's like to own one now
The 901 Motor is one of those consumer cameras that has, against all reasonable expectations, settled into a small but genuine collectors' market in the early 2020s. The renewed interest in 110 photography was driven partly by Lomography's decision in 2012 to resume manufacturing 110 film in colour, black-and-white and several specialty emulsions, and partly by the general resurgence in interest in late-1970s consumer industrial design as an aesthetic.
It has put working examples of the 901 series back into circulation at prices that, while not enormous, would have astonished anyone trying to give one away in 2005. A clean working 901 Motor with the Lux 901 flash and the original packaging will typically fetch £30 to £60 on UK eBay; the rarer 901 E variant, with its CdS meter, can go for substantially more.
What you get for the money is a small, beautifully-designed, slightly absurd object that takes mediocre photographs on a format that nobody really shoots seriously any more. The 13×17mm negative was always too small to deliver real image quality, even when 110 film was at its peak; the Color Apotar lens, while competent for what it is, simply doesn't have the resolution to do interesting things with anything larger than a postcard print; and the camera has no exposure controls to speak of on the base model, which means that what you point it at is what you get.
None of this matters very much, because the joy of a 901 Motor in 2026 is not in the photographs it produces but in the object itself — in the orange Sensor button, in the satisfying small whirr of the micro-motor, and in the perfect late-1970s industrial design.
