Castora’s Final Chapter

The third quarterly update for Visions of Eternity — the expansion's finale content — arrives this week, centred on Castora and the convergence event.

Week of 8 August 2026

Monday is busy this week. Guild Wars 2's Visions of Eternity expansion reaches its finale content in its third and final quarterly update, RuneScape 3's Leagues II: Equilibrium opens to free-to-play players for the first time, and World of Warcraft's Patch 12.1 arrives with the Coiled Isle, the Venomous Abyss, and Season 2 one week behind it. Those three events sit alongside the Elder Scrolls Online team's public reassurance about the game's future, GU 7.9.1 going live in Star Wars: The Old Republic, and the first launch-week images from Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2.

Guild Wars 2

The Visions of Eternity expansion reaches its climax this week with the third and final quarterly update, the largest of the three content releases in the expansion cycle. Alongside the new content, the Festival of the Four Winds has returned, and the WvW War Score system published the results of its second beta — the most detailed look yet at how the overhauled scoring model is performing.

Visions of Eternity — Third Quarterly Update

  • The third quarterly update is described as the expansion's conclusion and is the most content-dense of the three. It includes a new map, new story chapters, new masteries, and six additional Visions of Eternity relics. Full patch notes are published on the official site.

  • A new convergence — the expansion's 50-player instanced encounter format — is included in this update, along with a new fractal with fractal challenge mode, and a new raid encounter with its own challenge and legendary difficulty modes.

  • A new legendary weapon tied to the Visions of Eternity expansion is also part of this update, requiring participation across multiple systems and maps introduced since launch.

  • This update is also the point at which ArenaNet is expected to signal the future direction of Guild Wars 2 beyond the Visions of Eternity cycle — whether through a teaser, an announcement, or a roadmap reference.

WvW War Score — Beta 2 Results

  • ArenaNet published the results of WvW War Score Beta 2 on 4 August, revealing how the revised scoring formula performed across different server matchups. The post covers win-rate distribution, scoring balance between large and small servers, and the changes the team is making for Beta 3. The stated goal remains an equitable scoring system that rewards sustained effort rather than peak activity windows. Full results on the forums.

Festival of the Four Winds

  • The Festival of the Four Winds is live through 23 August, bringing the Labyrinthine Cliffs, Queen's Jubilee races, scavenger hunts, and seasonal rewards back to Tyria. The festival runs alongside the third quarterly update and provides a natural catch-up activity during the new content rollout.

The Warparty Timber Mammoth — the first four-player mount in The Elder Scrolls franchise — launched August 6, coinciding with Bethesda's 40th anniversary celebrations in ESO.

Elder Scrolls Online

Game director Nick Giacomini published a direct statement this week confirming ESO's continuation, followed by a revised development roadmap that maps out the rest of 2026 and shifts several larger systems to 2027. The week also brought the launch of the Warparty Timber Mammoth and Bethesda's 40th anniversary in-game event.

ESO Continues — Official Statement

  • In a post on 2 August, Giacomini stated directly: "ESO isn't going anywhere, and our team remains committed to the future of this game." The statement was made in response to community concern following the July layoffs. The full post is on the official site.

  • Giacomini also confirmed a closer relationship with Bethesda Game Studios, stating the two teams are working together more directly than before — consistent with the broader understanding that ZOS is contributing to the Elder Scrolls franchise's future.

Updated 2026 Roadmap

  • Update 51: on schedule for 28 September. Includes The Nowhere Vault (new solo content), the Rumours game system, and a suite of quality-of-life improvements.

  • Crimson Veldt trial: delayed to 2027. The trial features mounted combat, described as a design challenge requiring more time to execute well.

  • Update 52: moving to January 2027, including the Jerall Pass PvP zone.

  • Class and Combat refresh: also delayed to 2027. The Warden class rework, specifically, was confirmed this week as removed from Update 51.

  • Season 2 begins 21 October, and on 9 November the Greymoor Chapter and Markarth DLC become free for all players.

Bethesda 40th Anniversary and In-Game Events

  • The Warparty Timber Mammoth — the first four-player mount in ESO, and the first in the Elder Scrolls franchise — launched 6 August in the Crown Store.

  • Bethesda's 40th anniversary (1986–2026) is being marked in ESO with a free code: entering Bethesda40 in the Crown Store awards 2,000 Trade Bars. The code is valid through 13 August.

  • Whitestrake's Mayhem PvP event runs 5–12 August, offering bonus XP and AP for Cyrodiil, Imperial City, and Battleground participation.

  • U51 PTS continues testing. The August Crown Store showcase is live, featuring the Tenmars Fang Senche-raht (13 August – 10 September) and the return of Diamond Anniversary Crates from 20 August.

Leagues II: Equilibrium — Order versus Chaos, with Guthix holding the balance. The league launches Monday 10 August.

RuneScape 3

Leagues II: Equilibrium launches on Monday 10 August — the second RuneScape 3 league and the first in any RuneScape game accessible to free-to-play players. The final relic reveal was published on 7 August, completing the full picture of a seven-tier relic system that has generated substantial community discussion since the first reveals began in late July.

Equilibrium League — Launching 10 August

  • Launch time is 1:00 PM BST on Monday 10 August, following a brief maintenance from 11:15 AM BST. The league runs through 21 September — a 42-day window.

  • Free-to-play access is confirmed — a first for any RuneScape league. The starting regions are Misthalin and Havenhythe, with Karamja unlocking at the first task milestone (50 tasks). Players then choose three more from eight remaining regions.

  • The league theme pits Order (Saradomin) against Chaos (Zamorak), with Balance (Guthix) as a third path. A Blessing system runs alongside relics: blessing tasks unlock combat blessings tied to the chosen faction, with 26 blessing tasks needed for all tiers.

  • No damage cap: the 30,000 damage cap and life points cap are both lifted for this league. All characters operate under Ironman rules — no Grand Exchange, no player trading.

Full Relic Tier Structure

  • Tier 1: Endless Harvest, Survivalist, Golden Touch. Tier 2: Animal Wrangler, Superheated, Divine Druid. Tier 3: Nature's Network, Assassin's Insight, Voidwalker (confirmed). Tier 4: Crystal Grace, Transmutation, Antiquarian. Tier 5: Clue Connoisseur, Production Master, Devout. Tier 6: Perfection, Rejuvenated. Tier 7: Infernal Fire, Naragi, Edict, Iscaean Faith.

  • Region unlock milestones: Region 3 at 50 tasks (Karamja), Region 4 at 175, Region 5 at 300, Region 6 at 450 tasks.

Other RS3 News

  • Post-launch Construction improvements continue to be deployed: housing floor customisation (individually moveable rooms) is now live, as are Auction House improvements including faster price updates.

  • The RuneScape Monopoly edition is available for pre-order again following a second wave of demand since the initial run sold out.

Patch 12.1 arrives Monday — the Coiled Isle, the Venomous Abyss, and WoW's Season 2 beginning a week behind it.

World of Warcraft

Patch 12.1, Curse of Ula'tek, lands on Monday 11 August (US) / Tuesday 12 August (EU), with Season 2 following on 18 August. The patch is the largest single content drop in Midnight since launch, and the community has spent the past fortnight in detailed preparation — the lead-in questline has been live since July, and the PTR testing is complete.

Patch 12.1 — This Monday

  • The Coiled Isle zone opens at patch launch, with zone campaign quests, the new Prey hunt activities (Normal and Hard from day one), public events, and the zone's intrinsic Curse Surge mechanic. A new zone talent tree offering player power specific to the Coiled Isle is confirmed.

  • Altar of Fangs — the three-boss dungeon — opens on Heroic at patch launch. Mythic and Mythic+ difficulties follow with Season 2 the following week.

  • Two new regular Delves (Ring of Glory, Gnarldor Isle) and the Venomfall Deeps Nemesis Delve are available from launch. Bountiful Delves and tier keys unlock with Season 2.

  • Lairs: a new encounter type — instanced world bosses summoned via on-zone stones, scaling from Flex through Mythic (15–25 players). The first Lair, the Tidebound Grotto with Nimissa Wavecoiler, opens at launch. Normal, Heroic, and Mythic Flex open the following week.

  • Housing improvements: Blueprints (save and share house layouts), pet placement in housing with 11 plinth types, increased decor storage limit from 7,500 to 10,000, and house level cap raised to 12.

  • Decor Duels is removed in this patch. Remaining rewards are purchasable for Voidlight Marl through 12.1.

Season 2 — 18 August

  • The Venomous Abyss opens on 18 August across Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Raid Finder Wing 1 simultaneously. Raid Finder Wings 2–4 open one per week over the three following weeks; Story mode opens 26 August.

  • The Season 2 Mythic+ pool: Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Kings' Rest, Temple of Sethraliss, and Ruby Life Pools.

  • Nightmare mode Prey and the Curse of the Isle feature unlock on 18 August. Bonus roles return in week eight of the patch (from week one of the Great Vault for Season 2).

Classic — Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary

  • Black Temple and the Battle for Mount Hyjal open on 27 August in the Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary server, bringing Illidan Stormrage and Archimonde into the raid rotation. Turbulent Timeways continues this week with Burning Crusade Timewalking from the Tuesday reset.

Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV's first week on Nintendo Switch 2 has been eventful: the launch on 4 August went live, followed by an emergency maintenance from 11 PM PDT on 6 August through 2:55 AM PDT on 7 August (07:00–10:55 BST) after a server stability issue was identified. The game has since been confirmed stable, and the one-month free subscription period for Switch 2 players continues.

Switch 2 Launch

  • Final Fantasy XIV launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on 4 August. The Starter Edition is £11.99, the Complete Edition is £31.49 (pre-order price), and the Complete Collector's Edition is £61.59. The game download is approximately 117 GB. A Free Trial version is also available. The Switch 2 version requires its own separate subscription, separate from PC/PlayStation/Xbox; existing subscribers receive a 50% discount on the Switch 2 subscription.

  • Emergency maintenance on 6–7 August addressed server instability following the Switch 2 launch population increase. All worlds were taken offline for approximately four hours; the Lodestone confirmed completion and full stability by the morning of 7 August.

Events and Upcoming

  • The Yo-kai Watch collaboration event is live through 5 October. This is the event's fifth run. Weapons from the current lineup cover jobs through Shadowbringers; Reaper, Sage, and Pictomancer weapons remain unavailable.

  • Patch 7.56 — bringing the Beastmaster Limited Job and MSQ Part 2 — remains on schedule for 8 September.

  • The Evercold expansion continues tracking for January 2027 across all platforms including Switch 2.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Game Update 7.9.1 went live on 4 August, followed by a minor 7.9.1a hotfix on 7 August. The 8.0 PTS completed its first balance pass this week for Marauder/Sentinel and Powertech/Vanguard, with Galactic Season 11 approaching in ten days.

GU 7.9.1 — Live

  • Update 7.9.1 launched 4 August, adding the new Accessories category to the Cartel Market (covering cybernetic items, ear pieces, and implant-style cosmetics). Animated stronghold decorations now persist when leaving and re-entering strongholds. Legacy Titles can now be deselected in the Character Window. Patch notes are on the site.

  • GU 7.9.1a hotfix on 7 August addressed two specific issues: cybernetic accessories obscuring hoods on certain character models, and the I-V-sthetic item (from 8.0 PTS) not appearing correctly in Collections.

Galactic Season 11 — 18 August

  • Galactic Season 11: Light and Shadow begins 18 August. It combines content from Seasons 2 and 4, returning companions Fen Zeil and Amity alongside new rewards: companion customisations, the Safire City Haven Havar mount, companion-compatible mounts, titles, and Stronghold labels. Twitch Drops (Ruhnuk Poster for 1 hour, Vectron Colette EM4 mount for 5 hours) run through 1 September.

8.0 PTS — Balance Pass Round 2

  • The second wave of 8.0 class balance changes covers Marauder / Sentinel, Powertech / Vanguard, and their mirror disciplines, as detailed on Vulkk. Changes affect the level 83 ability slot for each discipline; feedback is being gathered before the broader player population test phase. No 8.0 launch date has been confirmed.

Black Desert Online

The August 6 patch was one of the more substantial routine updates in recent memory for BDO, activating Guild Fame and revamping the guild war declaration system, while Edania Part 2 content entered Global Lab testing.

August 6 Patch

  • Guild Fame is now live: an ongoing guild-wide progression metric earned through missions, boss kills, and daily activities. Guilds spending 400,000 Guild Fame can declare Guild War on another guild without requiring acceptance — though wars last only 48 hours, and the same guild cannot be declared on again within 48 hours of a war's end.

  • Guild League Focus Week: a pre-season Guild League event runs this week ahead of the regular Guild League Season beginning 27 August.

  • A new world boss, Dark Bonghwang, is now available in the world boss rotation. The boss drops new gear relevant to the current progression bracket.

  • Agent class fine-tuning: several animation and hitbox adjustments were deployed alongside the main patch.

Edania Part 2 — Global Lab Preview

  • Edania Part 2's full content — new regions, new items, Life Artifact additions, and accessories — entered Global Lab testing on 7 August. This is the live test server for upcoming content; the full Edania Part 2 release remains on track for the patch on approximately 13 August.

  • The Global Lab patch also previewed the AP/DP bracket update associated with the level cap increase to 70 and DLSS/FSR 4 integration coming with or shortly after the main Edania Part 2 release.

Old School RuneScape

Wyrmscraig received its first round of post-launch fixes on 5 August, with one of the more notable additions being the ability to fish from your Sailing boat. This quality-of-life addition had been on the community wish list since Sailing launched. The Fractured Archives poll is now open, and RuneFest 2026 has confirmed its dates.

Wyrmscraig and Sailing Fixes — 5 August

  • Fishing from your boat: while aboard a Sloop or Skiff, players can now fish using rod fishing; rafts support harpoon, net, and lobster pot fishing. Fishing spots are fixed 5×5 tiles rather than the 1×1 spots used on land, at the same rates and requirements. The Teleport to Boat spell has also been added to the Max Cape perk pool.

  • Portal Nexus now supports teleporting to your Last Boat location.

  • Mad Angel fixes: a shadow has been added to improve click accuracy; pet collection log ordering fixed; Golem Crafting sound effects are no longer audible across the island from other players.

  • A backend preparatory step for the New Renderer beta has been quietly added to the official client as a greyed-out setting — no ETA, but the project is confirmed ongoing.

Fractured Archives — Poll Open

  • The Fractured Archives rewards poll opened 3 August and is currently live. Players are voting on the reward set for the Raids 4 content, covering gear appearance options and unique item types. Results will determine what drops when the raid launches later this year.

RuneFest 2026

  • RuneFest 2026 is confirmed for 3–4 October. Location and ticket details are expected in the coming weeks.

EVE Online

EVE published a retrospective on Operation Avalon — the July alpha playtest of EVE Vanguard — this week, and EVE Frontier announced its next content cycle.

Operation Avalon — Retrospective

  • Operation Avalon, the EVE Vanguard alpha running 7–20 July, has been formally wrapped up in a post published 6 August. The event involved warclones deploying planetside in Vanguard while capsuleers completed investigations in EVE Online, with both contributing toward building Avalon — a haven for warclone characters. CCP noted that the event changed the shape of the cluster in a way that will persist.

  • Alliance Tournament XXII preliminary planning continues. Registration closed 30 July; the first rounds begin 29–30 August.

EVE Frontier — Cycle 2

  • EVE Frontier Cycle 2: Ash and Resolve is announced for 20 August. Frontier is CCP's separate hardcore survival spinoff; Cycle 2 will reset the server, introducing modular ship building, new enemies, and environmental hazards.

Broader Genre News

EverQuest Legends continues to perform well in its launch week, and a Lord of the Rings Online expansion announcement is now confirmed.

EverQuest Legends — Post-Launch

  • EverQuest Legends is in its first full week of operation following its 28 July launch. Server queues have stabilised, with six US servers and two EU servers operational. Community reception continues to be broadly positive, particularly among players returning to the EverQuest franchise after a long absence. The first post-launch patch is expected this week.

Lord of the Rings Online — Expansion Announcement

  • Standing Stone Games confirmed on 31 July that a new LOTRO expansion will be announced, with full details of the name, setting, and content to follow imminently. The current Ill Omens skirmish event continues through 11 August. Development of the Angmarim Sorceress — the first new PvMP class in 18 years — is also ongoing.

Albion Online — Dragonfire Update

  • Albion Online is on track for its Dragonfire update on 31 August, adding a new biome, new gear tiers, and PvE content—no significant player-safety issues reported since the last major update.

Neverwinter — Module 33: Biting Cold

  • Neverwinter Module 33: Biting Cold launched in late June, adding new icy wasteland content, a new dungeon, and new gear. The module has been running for several weeks and is the current endgame destination for active players.

Looking Ahead

Monday is the most significant single day in MMORPG news in several weeks: WoW Patch 12.1 goes live, RS3 Leagues II opens, and the GW2 expansion finalises its storyline. Three major games each deliver their biggest content moment of the current cycle simultaneously — an unusual convergence that will scatter attention across the genre.

The following week brings WoW Season 2 proper on August 18, Galactic Season 11 in SWTOR, and Edania Part 2 in BDO on August 12. Further ahead: BlizzCon on September 12 will likely bring the first hints of WoW's post-12.1 direction, and FFXIV's Beastmaster patch on September 8 will be a meaningful preview of how the Limited Job format has evolved since Blue Mage. RuneFest on October 3–4 is the first real community gathering of the autumn.
