Fifth Wheel
Saturday. It’s been cold day; a little damp and drizzle at first, but bright and sunny from mid-morning onwards. Monty, Ken, Vanessa, Milo and Dash all went on a trip to the huge Ikea at Lakeside Retail Park. M&K were looking at furniture ideas for when they get their own place at some point in the coming year, but mostly they wanted to have the Swedish meatballs for lunch. I had a bunch of editing to do on a project, so it was nice to have a quiet house for a few hours. Later in the afternoon, I made a big pot of curry to feed the masses.
Milo needed to hit the town, so I gave him a lift to Canterbury just before eight. Drama happened in the form of a large fire at the old Odeon cinema on St George’s Place—it’s been abandoned for years—and many of the roads into the city centre were closed. According to local news, fifteen fire engines were at the scene; the fire had first been reported around two in the afternoon and was still going when we got there. Gabriel’s favourite nightclub, the Tokyo Tea Rooms, is right next door—so we’re keeping our fingers crossed it survives.
