Glass 2

Thursday. I woke to an eerie orange glow from the window. Outside, the heavens were alive with glowing, red, misty clouds to the east; fully half the sky was on fire. To the west, a uniform, solid curtain of gunmetal grey. “Shepherd’s Warning”, said Milo, sagely, as he emerged from his room to see me staring at the spectacle above.

The shepherds were not wrong. Ten minutes later the deluge began. It was a slow drive to work, traffic sensibly crawling in the rain. The morning shift was hectic, but it ended early, and I was able to get most of the afternoon’s work done in advance. By way of comic relief, my poor friend Charlotte was caught in the downpour as she walked in, and appeared at my door clutching paperwork in mismatched scrubs and borrowed flip-flops. She became affectionately known as ‘Drip’ for the rest of the day.

The weather turned by midday and I drove home in blazing sunshine for a peaceful afternoon. In the evening, Vanessa went out with her work friends for dinner at The Haywain in Bramling; lifts were required, and Raff kindly stepped in to help with these.
