One Man & His Fish

Saturday. It’s another big day for Gabriel — he’s off on a nine-day coach tour of Switzerland, with stops in Paris, Davos and Geneva. There’s a bittersweet sting to the tale: originally this had been Ed’s holiday, all bought and paid for, but his sudden back troubles and recent spinal surgery mean he can’t make the trip himself. The timing could not have been worse, and at this late stage, he would have lost 90% of the value if he’d simply cancelled.

Rather than waste the holiday altogether, Gubs is taking one for the team, and manfully soaking up all that luxury so the rest of us don’t have to. The coach picked him up in Dover this morning, before heading to the port for the crossing to France.

It’s a cool, slightly cloudy day, and quite a pleasant change from the heat. Mid-morning, I drove to Deal for a stroll along the seafront, just to get some steps in, and resisted the temptation to check Hut 55 for Offensively Large Scotch Eggs. The softer light looked great on this statue that stands at the entrance to Deal Pier: the dude is really, really fond of that fish.
