Inner Edania — the Throne region and its surrounding ancient jungle, August 2026

Month of August 2026

August was one of the more eventful months in the MMORPG calendar for some time. Black Desert Online opened a sweeping new expansion zone with the second half of its Edania continent. World of Warcraft's Race to World First for the Venomous Abyss raid was still running as August closed, with Team Liquid on the doorstep of the final boss. Star Wars: The Old Republic finally named its long-anticipated expansion. Albion Online launched what it describes as its largest update ever. And Amazon announced it was stepping back from the MMO publishing business altogether, handing two major titles to their original developers. By any measure, there was a great deal going on.

Black Desert Online

Inner Edania Arrives

The headline delivery of August was the Inner Edania patch, which landed on 13 August (roughly 3 GB) and substantially expanded the game's Edania continent introduced earlier in 2026. Edania Part 2 is centred on the Angavu Outpost hub, from which players reach four new weekly boss encounters: Aphrodon, Hermesia, Magaia, and Aresion. Each occupies a distinct temple zone with its own ecology and drop table, rewarding the new Twilight of the End accessories and — at higher tiers — the Ekleta and Apeiron jewellery sets that are set to define the endgame gear ceiling for the foreseeable future. The world boss Throne of Edania provides a further focal point.

Alongside these new combat destinations, the patch raised the character level cap from 67 to 70, introduced the Godslayer armour appearance, and removed DirectX 9 and Windows 7 support — the latter a quiet but overdue housekeeping measure. The patch notes are thorough, and the Tachyon Legacy exploration content scattered through the new zone adds something for players less focused on pure combat progression.

A Busy Month of Patches

The Inner Edania launch was followed by two further noteworthy weekly patches. The 20 August update (955 MB, 231 changes) focused primarily on class balance — attempting to narrow the damage gap between classes while leaving survivability and combat feel broadly intact — alongside quality-of-life additions such as the Guild Strategy Mapping tool on the world map and a War Proposal system that allows guilds to agree a six-hour declared war without either side losing Guild Fame.

The Altar of Blood received fresh content as well. The 27 August patch (1.05 GB, 104 changes) added the Guild League: Victory for All mode, extended ocean content, and — notably for the PvP community — introduced nerfs to the Grab mechanics that had been a source of friction. A level 75 revamp and experience restructure are planned for 8 October, so the current cap raise is understood to be a staging point rather than a ceiling. In the meantime, Black Desert has maintained an unusually active patch cadence throughout August.

The Venomous Abyss raid — World of Warcraft: Midnight, Season 2

World of Warcraft

Patch 12.1 and the Coiled Isle

World of Warcraft's Midnight expansion continued its steady rollout with Patch 12.1 'Curse of Ula'tek', which went live on 11 August in North America and 12 August in Europe. The central addition is the Coiled Isle, a new zone that continues the Amani and Loa storyline that began in patch 12.0.7 and threads it toward the eventual confrontation with the serpent goddess Ula'tek.

The zone comes with the Altar of Fangs dungeon, two new Delves, new Prey targets, and a further round of Player Housing improvements: blueprint sharing, new room types, expanded exterior options, a dye system, and the pleasingly domestic addition of pet wandering. Housing in Midnight has developed with more care than this feature typically receives in WoW's history, and the patch-by-patch additions are incremental but genuine. Source: Blizzard

Season 2 and the Race to World First

Midnight Season 2 opened on 18 August in North America (19 August EU), bringing with it the Venomous Abyss raid — eight bosses culminating in Ula'tek herself — along with Mythic+ Season 2, rated PvP Season 2, Bountiful Delves, and the Tidebound Grotto lair. The Race to World First began immediately.

As August ended and the first days of September arrived, Team Liquid held the lead with seven of eight Mythic bosses defeated and Ula'tek still standing. Consequence had claimed the first kill of Nek'zali the Soulcoiler on 20 August; Method the first Vashnik the Malignant kill (24–25 August); Echo the Twin Fangs (26 August); and Liquid themselves the Coiled Altar after approximately 310 pulls. The final boss remains undefeated at the time of writing. Should Liquid close it out, it would be their fifth consecutive Race to World First victory. The Burning Crusade Classic equivalent — Black Temple and Mount Hyjal — opened for Classic players on 27 August.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Light and Shadow

August began for SWTOR players with Game Update 7.9.1 'Light and Shadow', which launched on 4 August. The headline addition was Galactic Season 11, with its attendant seasonal objectives, rewards track, and companion opportunities. The Swoop Rally event returned in its familiar form. It was a maintenance update in the tradition of the .1 patches — content meant to keep the community occupied while attention shifted toward the announcement coming later in the month.

Masters of the Force

On 13 August, Broadsword formally named the next major SWTOR expansion: Game Update 8.0, 'Masters of the Force'. The announcement had been anticipated for some time — the broad outline of Ryloth as a new destination and a storyline called Galaxy in Chaos had circulated on the Public Test Server — but the official naming and accompanying detail gave the expansion its full shape.

It introduces Ryloth as an explorable planet, a new operation called Children of Nul (three bosses aboard Darth Nul's ancient Sith dreadnought, the Enigma, available in Story and Veteran Mode at launch with 8-player group size), a level cap increase from 80 to 85, new abilities across all disciplines, overworld Difficulty Modes (Story, Veteran, and Master), a Ventures system offering Classic and Expert challenge characters, improved levelling flow, and a revised gearing structure. The launch window is confirmed for Holiday 2026, coinciding with the game's 15th anniversary.

The announcement was accompanied by immediate access to a Public Test Server build covering Marauder/Sentinel, Powertech/Vanguard, and Sage/Sorcerer at level 85, along with the first boss of Children of Nul in both Story and Veteran modes. Community response has been cautiously warm — SWTOR's playerbase tends toward the pragmatic, and the detail on the operation and planet has given people something concrete to assess rather than promises. Whether 8.0 delivers as a proper expansion release remains to be seen; Holiday 2026 will answer.

Guild Wars 2

Festival of the Four Winds

August's primary in-game event for Guild Wars 2 was the return of the Festival of the Four Winds, which ran from 11 August through 1 September. The annual occasion at the Labyrinthine Cliffs brought its familiar mix of racing, trading, and Zephyrite commerce, along with the year's additions to its rewards structure: Cloud Pteruges leg armour as the annual meta reward, a reprised Spellwork weapon set, the Plush Kralky backpack, Deft Lahar homestead recipes, and the Mini Lightning Crystal. For those with the homestead system unlocked, the seasonal additions to the recipe list are now a secondary reason to engage with the festival alongside the established rewards track.

Code of Creation — September

The significant news of August was not a content launch but an announcement: on 11 August, ArenaNet confirmed that Code of Creation, the final major update for the Visions of Eternity expansion, will release on 15 September. The update has been anticipated throughout the Visions of Eternity quarterly cycle, and the announcement put concrete dates on content that players had been tracking on the roadmap.

Code of Creation will bring six story chapters concluding the VoE narrative, the Leyspring Hollows explorable map, a Depths of Cruelty meta event, the Nexus of Eternity raid (Challenge Mode following on 29 September, legendary armour available 13 October), the Solitary Throne fractal with its own CM, Nexus Convergence, the Rift Amplification mastery, the Wages of Stars legendary sword, and the Volatile Ascension infusion. Source: MassivelyOP.

ArenaNet also sketched the post-VoE landscape: an 18-month gap before the next expansion, a WvW borderlands map beta expected in late 2026, and Hall of Monuments integration for Guild Wars 3 also flagged for late 2026.

14th Anniversary and WvW Beta

Guild Wars 2 turned fourteen on 28 August — and the 2026 anniversary observance included a sale of up to 40% off past expansions. The WvW War Score Beta 3 ran from 11 August through 4 September, with ArenaNet refining the scoring model: defensive player-kill score raised from 3 to 5, elimination of scaling by enemy count, and a new Match Statistics tab giving commanders more data to work with. The actual game builds in August were limited to bug fixes — three minor updates — as the studio holds its content for the 15 September release.

Wyrmscraig — a new Sailing destination in The Lonely Sea, August 2026

Old School RuneScape

Wyrmscraig and the Sailing Skill

Old School RuneScape's newest skill, Sailing, has continued to expand its geography. Wyrmscraig island — requiring 62 Sailing and available to members — arrived on 29 July and was the primary Sailing destination throughout August. Located in The Lonely Sea, it offers content appropriate to the skill level required, and forms part of the broader pattern of OSRS building out the Sailing skill through a series of island destinations rather than releasing everything at once. The approach has attracted some criticism for the pace of new content, though it does at least mean each destination gets proper attention. Source: OSRS

Summer Sweep Up

The 12 August balance patch, marketed as the Summer Sweep Up, addressed several long-standing calibration issues. The Hallowed Sepulchre's Agility requirements were reduced — Floor 4 dropping from 82 to 77, Floor 5 from 92 to 87 — making the Sepulchre accessible earlier and likely increasing its player population.

The Colossal Wyrm Agility courses were extended by roughly 25% on the basic course and 40% on the advanced, with rewards scaled to reflect the longer commitment. Eight new Agility shortcuts were added elsewhere in the world.

More significantly for the endgame economy, the Chambers of Xeric drop table was rebalanced: Arcane and Dextrous scrolls became 20–26% rarer, while Ancestral pieces became 53–64% more common — a fairly substantial redistribution that the community has been debating with its customary enthusiasm ever since.

Golden Gnome Awards

The Golden Gnome Awards 2026 are in progress, with finalists announced on 7 August and voting open through 14 August. Winners will be revealed at RuneFest on 3–4 October. The awards recognise community content creators across video, streaming, art, and written categories, and RuneFest remains the primary in-person gathering for the OSRS community. Bronzeman Mode and the 'A Ruff Situation' quest are also heading to the community poll.

RuneScape 3

Leagues II: Equilibrium

RuneScape 3's second seasonal league, Leagues II: Equilibrium, launched on 10 August and runs through 21 September. The format differs meaningfully from the first RS3 league: for the first time, it is accessible to free-to-play players, who receive four starting regions (versus six for members), relics up to tier 3 of 7, and blessings up to tier 2. The experience multiplier begins at 5× — slightly ahead of Catalyst's 4× starting point — and scales to 16× at tier 6.

The league is designed as a parallel progression experience rather than a competition with winners, which suits the RS3 community's general tendency to play at its own pace. Known issues emerged within the first few days and were addressed in a post on 14 August. The 17 August marketplace update brought the Blooming Gardens cosmetic theme, and 'The Week Ahead' update on 24 August expanded the league content further alongside new garden bundles in the marketplace.

Alliance Tournament XXII — preliminary rounds began 29–30 August 2026

EVE Online

Alliance Tournament XXII

The XXII Alliance Tournament got under way at the end of August, with the preliminary rounds taking place on 29–30 August (Weekend 1). The prize ships for this year were announced on 10 August: the Herald, an electronic attack frigate derived from the Sentinel hull, and the Penitence, a combat recon cruiser built on the Curse. One hundred and forty of each will be distributed, along with Amarr Victory SKINs awarded per match win. Source: EVE. Weekend 2 (5–6 September) is this weekend; finals run 31 October–1 November.

Exordium Region

CCP — now operating under the Fenris Creations name — published a devblog on the new Exordium region, described as a PvP-free starter area with safety locked to green. Connected to Yulai via a two-way stargate currently under construction, with four one-way shipcasters leading to the faction headquarters, Exordium is intended to give genuinely new players a foothold that isn't immediately contested. The region is still populating with content, and CCP have been measured in their claims about it — characterising it as a developing space rather than a finished product. Source: forums

Community

The Community Beat for 15 August noted that Rampage Inc, a well-known EVE corporation, organised a fundraiser in memory of Innominate — a prominent tournament player who passed away earlier this year — raising $21,000 for his family. Source: EVE

Elder Scrolls Online

August was a relatively quiet month for ESO in terms of live content, but the context around the game continued to generate discussion. The Update 51 PTR opened on 3 August, featuring the Nowhere Vault solo dungeon, a new Rumours system, and in-game event additions. The Whitestrake's Mayhem PvP event ran 5–12 August, and the Golden Pursuits event began on 20 August with Crown Crate reward tracks running through 17 September.

The Crown Store continued to offer elaborate cosmetics including a four-seater war elephant mount and a sprawling manor house — though the removal of Crown Store access via the website (attributed to cuts following the Microsoft acquisition) added to a general sense of uncertainty around the game's infrastructure.

The Night Market, a feature teased earlier in the year, has been pushed to the first half of 2027. MassivelyOP described August as grim for ESO fans despite continued assurances in the official roadmap. Whether U51 and the content coming after it can shift that mood is something the autumn will need to answer.

Albion Online: Dragonfire — the Dragon Sanctuary raid and Azaryon the fire dragon, launched 31 August 2026

Broader Genre News

Amazon Steps Back

The most structurally significant news of August did not involve any individual game's patch notes. On 12 August, Amazon announced that it is withdrawing from MMORPG publishing. Lost Ark will transfer to its original developer, Smilegate, in early 2027, with character data and most account data carrying over automatically. The Spanish localisation will be removed in October 2026, and a short opt-out window is available for players who would prefer not to have their data transferred. Throne and Liberty will move to NC/FirstSpark in Q4 2026. Source: Lost Ark.

Amazon's involvement in the MMO space began with New World — itself heading toward server shutdown on 31 January 2027 — and the withdrawal of the Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty publishing arrangements marks a fairly complete retreat from the genre.

Albion Online: Dragonfire

Albion Online launched its Dragonfire expansion on 31 August, described by Sandbox Interactive as the game's largest update to date. The expansion adds the Ancient Lands, a region of floating islands forming a distinct new zone, and introduces the Dragon Sanctuary — a 20-player raid with Azaryon, a fire dragon, as its final boss.

Drake mounts and open-world dragon attacks round out the dragon theme. The expansion marks a deliberate step into more structured group content for a game that has historically leaned toward open-world, player-driven conflict. Source: Steam

Stars Reach and Aion 2

Stars Reach entered early access on 18 August at three price tiers ($30/$50/$80), making it one of the more significant new MMO launches of the year for those who have been following its development. Aion 2 has global early access scheduled for 30 September, with full launch on 5 October. RuneScape: Dragonwilds — the survival spinoff from Jagex — has its 1.0 launch set for 15 September. Skyforge PC servers will close on 3 September, bringing the game's desktop run to an end.

Looking Ahead

September's most anticipated single event is the conclusion of the World of Warcraft Race to World First, with Ula'tek still undefeated as this article goes to print. BlizzCon runs 12–13 September in Anaheim, where a 'What's Next' panel for WoW is expected to give the first detailed look at the game's road beyond Midnight — quite possibly including the next expansion, rumoured as The Last Titan.

Guild Wars 2's Code of Creation lands 15 September, drawing the Visions of Eternity story to a close and setting the stage for whatever ArenaNet's 18-month expansion gap produces. SWTOR's Masters of the Force PTS feedback continues to accumulate, and FFXIV will patch to 7.56 on 8 September — adding the Beastmaster limited job, the second part of the Dawntrail main scenario conclusion, and the Crucible of the Unbroken activity, ahead of the Evercold expansion in January 2027. It will be a busy autumn.
