Hide & Seek

Doddington Place Gardens, Sittingbourne, August 2014

Our camera club had a summer outing to the wonderful Doddington Place Gardens near Faversham this evening. These lovely landscaped gardens, recognised as being of historical importance by English Heritage, are set on the grounds of an imposing Victorian mansion and cover ten acres. The gardens have been open in aid of the National Gardens Scheme for more than fifty years. Vanessa and the younger boys came along for the trip, and I took this picture of Milo counting to twenty while playing hide and seek with his brothers.

Doddington Place is surrounded by wooded countryside in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the North Downs. The landscaped gardens are set in the grounds of a large Victorian mansion, which covers about ten acres and has been open for over fifty years. There is a woodland garden, spectacular in May and June, which includes many different varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas; there is also a large Edwardian rock garden with pools, a formal sunk garden with herbaceous borders, and a flint and brick folly. Lovely clipped yew hedges and fine mature trees bound extensive lawns and avenues. The garden has been the setting of the television series Perfect Scoundrels and Great Houses Cookery episodes. Part of the film Waterland, starring Jeremy Irons and Natasha Richardson, was filmed here. Doddington Place is about 10 minutes from the A20 and A2, and you can exit the M2 at either Junction 5 or 6, depending on which way you are coming. The postcode to use for navigation apps is ME9 0BB.
