My Back Yard
Canterbury, April 2015
We had lovely warm spring weather this afternoon, great for spending time outside. Dash paused for me, sitting at the bottom of the slide so I could take my daily photo. This is an excellent example of a shot which needed to be black & white from the start - the intense shadows form lines which converge on the subject and mirror the diagonal bars of the climbing frame. I’ve been a predominantly monochrome photographer for a while now, so I tend to ‘see’ the scene in black & white anyway and chose this spot because of the shadows. I’d recommend anyone to try an exercise where you shoot exclusively in monochrome for a month or two - it will help to train your brain to start seeing the patterns of light and shade and contrast, as well as opening your photographic eye to the clearly superior world of monochrome!
