Virginia, Cavan, Ireland, August 2014
This afternoon, we headed down to Virginia, about 20 miles south of Cavan, for the annual agricultural show there. This was a crowded and lively event, with hundreds of stalls and shows of sheep, horses, cows and bulls - even a dog show. We met with Vanessa's family there, and our boys had a wonderful time running around and climbing tractors with their cousins. Dash was particularly unhappy about something in this image and made it very clear! The Virginia Agricultural Show, or Virginia Show, is an annual agricultural fair held at the Virginia Show Grounds. The current show has been running for over 75 years. It is particularly well-known for the Diageo Baileys Irish Champion Dairy Cow competition, which will see top breeders from across the island of Ireland compete for the title.
Virginia is on the N3 route approximately 85 km northwest of Dublin and was once a staging and rest point for the coaches plying between Enniskillen and Dublin. Virginia is connected to Dublin by an hourly bus service from Cavan town Bus Éireann. The M3 motorway was completed in 2010 and links the northwest of Dublin to the nearby town of Kells, 20 km from Virginia. This has considerably cut journey times to Dublin and made the town more favourable for commuters.
