Canon A-1
The Canon A-1 was, for a few brief years at the end of the 1970s, the most technologically advanced 35mm SLR in the world — and the camera that made the small black computer-controlled SLR feel inevitable. It launched in early 1978, sat at the top of Canon's enormously successful A-series for the whole of its eight-year production run, and was the first 35mm camera anywhere to offer all four of what would later become the standard PASM exposure modes (Program, Aperture priority, Shutter priority and Manual) in a single body (Canon Classics). Canon eventually built 2.43 million of them between March 1978 and 1985, making it one of the great commercial successes of the late film era and a camera whose all-black, slightly intimidating control layout still looks more like a serious professional tool than the AE-1s and AT-1s sitting next to it on the shelf (KniPPsen).
I did not own one when it was current. The A-1 in my collection was bought on eBay in 2007, by which point I had moved entirely to digital and had started — for reasons that made perfect sense to me at the time and still do, just about — quietly accumulating the late-period Canon FD bodies and lenses I had grown up wanting and could now finally afford. My father had owned one from new, bought somewhere around 1979 when the camera was still very much current, and I remember it from family albums and from being allowed, very occasionally and under close supervision, to hold it. Getting my own copy nearly thirty years later was less about the camera itself and more about closing a small loop.
A short history of the A-series and the road to the A-1
To understand what makes the A-1 historically significant, you have to first understand the A-series it sat at the top of, and the camera that started it all. In April 1976 Canon released the AE-1, the first 35mm SLR designed from the outset around a central microprocessor. The development programme had run for 28 months under the wonderfully cloak-and-dagger working title "New Model X Development Plan", and had been the result of Canon's collaboration with Texas Instruments on calculator microprocessors during the early 1970s (678 Vintage Cameras).
By moving the AE-1's control logic onto a single LSI chip, Canon was able to eliminate approximately 300 parts from the camera compared with previous designs, reduce the assembly process to five main modules and twenty-five sub-modules, and automate large parts of production. This in turn meant that a small, sophisticated, electronically-controlled SLR with shutter-priority autoexposure could be sold at a price point that almost any keen photographer could afford (Canon Camera Museum, Digital Camera World).
The AE-1 was a runaway hit. Canon sold roughly 1.2 million of them in the first 20 months and 5.73 million by the time production ended in 1984, helping the company seize over thirty percent of a 35mm SLR market that until then had been comfortably dominated by Nikon, Pentax and Minolta.
The strategic logic of the A-series, however, was that the AE-1 was only the beginning. By designing a single compact aluminium-alloy chassis with a shared horizontal cloth-curtain shutter and a common set of internal subassemblies, Canon could spread tooling costs across a family of cameras at different feature levels — the manual-only AT-1 (December 1976), the aperture-priority-only AV-1 (1979), the simplified AE-1 Program (1981) and the focus-assist AL-1 (1982) — each with different ABS plastic top and bottom panels and different control layouts, but all sharing the same fundamental engineering underneath.
The A-1 was the version where Canon stopped being polite about it. Released in March 1978, it was positioned squarely against the most advanced cameras Nikon, Minolta and Pentax could field, and was deliberately aimed at serious enthusiasts and second-body professionals rather than the AE-1's mass-market audience. It cost $625 in the United States with a 50mm f/1.4 SSC lens at launch (around $375 to $435 for the body alone at typical 30-40% dealer discount), came only in all-black with no chrome variant, and was the first camera to make a serious public marketing virtue of its computer brain (Wikipedia).
Where Minolta's XD of 1977 had offered aperture priority, shutter priority and manual modes from a single dial, the A-1 added programmed autoexposure on top — the world's first 35mm SLR with all five exposure modes (P, Tv, Av, manual, plus a stopped-down AE setting for older FL lenses), and arguably the first true "computer with a lens on the front" (The Noisy Shutter).
What's inside
Inside the A-1's compact black body — 141 × 92 × 48mm, 620 grams — sit three LSI chips, one linear LSI for analogue light metering and one Bi-MOS IC, all driven from a single 4LR44 (or PX-28) 6V battery. The camera supports six exposure modes in total: shutter-priority AE, aperture-priority AE, programmed AE, full AE flash photography with dedicated Canon Speedlites, stopped-down AE for non-FD lenses and full manual override. Mode selection is performed with a small AE mode selector lever next to the shutter button, and shutter speeds or apertures are dialled in via a single multi-function "AT dial" (Aperture/Time) on the top plate — a piece of human-interface design that took a small amount of getting used to in 1978 but which has aged surprisingly well (Canon A-1 instruction manual, Mir Canon A-1 spec).
The headline feature, though, is the viewfinder. The A-1 has a six-digit, seven-segment red LED alphanumeric display running across the bottom of the finder which shows shutter speed and aperture digitally, in selectable combinations, rather than via the conventional matched-needle galvanometer or vertical LED stack used by every other SLR of the period. The display is fed by a silicon photocell measuring TTL centre-weighted average light through the fully open aperture, with an exposure compensation range of ±2 EV, a dedicated AE lock for temporarily holding a reading, and a self-timer.
The metering range is genuinely wide for the era — ASA 6 to 12,800 film speeds, 30 seconds to 1/1000 second shutter (electronically controlled, horizontal cloth focal-plane), flash sync at 1/60. EV range with an f/1.4 lens and ASA 100 film runs from EV-2 (f/1.4, 8 seconds) to EV18 (f/16, 1/1000 second), which covers essentially anything you would actually point the camera at.
The chassis itself is the same compact aluminium alloy unit shared with the rest of the A-series — relatively light, surprisingly stiff, and reliably constructed — wrapped in textured ABS plastic body panels that have weathered the intervening decades reasonably well on most surviving examples.
The cloth-curtain shutter is also the standard A-series unit, which is the source of the A-series's single most famous quirk. After fifteen to twenty years of use, the small lubricated nylon mirror-damper assembly inside the lower part of the mirror box dries out and starts to make a distinctive high-pitched squeak each time the shutter fires — the so-called "Canon Cough", well documented across the entire A-series. It's a maintenance issue rather than a fault (a few drops of the right lubricant administered by a technician will silence it permanently), but on a sample that has not been serviced you will hear it the first time you fire the shutter and you will not be able to un-hear it afterwards (repair walkthrough, Mir A-series).
The Controls
The Canon A-1 is the flagship of the A-series, aimed squarely at serious amateurs and professionals, and a rather different beast to its siblings. The complexity of the controls reflects this, but there’s a quiet logic to the layout and you could never accuse the A-1 of being difficult to use. On the front of the camera, there’s the battery door and latch to the left of the lens, along with a mounting socket and positioning pin for the Action Grip seen in most images of the camera.
On the lens mount itself at the 2 o’clock position, the Exposure Preview Switch and Exposure Memory Switch. Below those, at the 4 o’clock position, the Stop-Down Slider — which is required for shooting with FL lenses. At the front of the top plate, to the right of the prism, lies the PC Flash Sync socket — which usually comes with a black protective cover if it has not been lost. On the other side, to the left of the prism, is the sliding AT Dial Guard.
On the top plate, at the left, is the film rewind knob with its fold-out crank, surrounded by the combined Exposure Compensation and Film Speed dial. Next to it, at the back, the Exposure Compensation Lock button, pressing it allows you to turn the dial in 1/3-stop increments. You set the ASA by lifting the ring slightly and turning. To the front, the battery check button and viewfinder display lever.
In the centre, the hot shoe sits atop the prism housing, and just to the right is the shutter release button, with a central cable release thread and surrounded by the AE Mode Selector, with the rectangular AE Mode Window that displays either shutter speeds or apertures depending on the AE mode selected. Next to to the prism housing at the back is another small window for the frame counter. Right next the the shutter button, there is a small red LED for the self-timer and battery check functions. Furthest right on the top plate, the film advance lever is surrounded by the Main Switch (which also selects the Self-Timer settings), and a separate Multiple Exposure lever. The small frame counter window is visible by the tip of the film advance lever.
The back of the camera is relatively plain, with just the viewfinder behind the prism housing, and the film door with the door latch to the left and the hinges to the right, from this viewpoint. There’s no window to check the film that you have loaded — instead there is a holder for displaying the end of the cardboard film packet to serve as a memo.
On the baseplate there is more to see. At the left, the circular drive/winder coupling cover and the small winder positioning hole just below it — which allow attachment of the Motor Drive MA and Power Winder A accessories. Further right, the recessed film rewind button, CANON JAPAN stamp, and the tripod mount centrally. The Motor Drive MA
The studio image above shows the A-1 fitted with what is probably the single most aggressive-looking accessory Canon ever made for the A-series — the Motor Drive MA, introduced in 1978 specifically for the A-1 and (later) the AE-1 Program. It comes in two parts that bolt together: a motor unit, which is an L-shaped casting with an integrated handgrip and the actual film-advance mechanism inside, and a large rectangular battery pack that clips onto the bottom of the motor unit and holds twelve AA batteries in two stacks of six. The whole assembly weighs roughly 600 grams loaded with alkalines and turns the A-1 from a compact enthusiast SLR into a substantial professional-feeling tool with proper sports-shooting heft (FlynnGraphics).
Performance on the A-1 is genuinely impressive for the period: three modes (single frame, low-speed continuous at 3.5 fps with alkalines, high-speed continuous at 5 fps), two shutter buttons (one on top for normal shooting and one on the side of the handgrip for vertical-format shooting), and an "Instant High Speed" button that lets you jump straight to 5 fps for a quick burst regardless of which mode the main switch is in. The instant button has a small lock lever which can be turned to a red dot to disable it accidentally — a nice ergonomic touch. There's a remote release socket for cable or wireless triggering, and Canon's separate Interval Timer TM-1 could be plugged in for fully automated long-exposure sequence work. With the optional Ni-Cd Pack MA in place of the alkaline pack, the maximum rate drops slightly to 4 fps but the running cost falls considerably, which mattered when you were shooting a lot of film (Mir Motor Drive MA).
The Motor Drive MA also handily distinguishes between the A-1 and AE-1 Program (the only two A-series bodies it actually fits — the coupling at the camera base isn't present on the AE-1, AT-1, AV-1 or AL-1) and the cheaper, simpler Power Winder A and Power Winder A2, which are 2 fps single-frame-only units intended for any A-series body and run on four AAs rather than twelve. The Motor Drive MA is a serious motor drive in the proper sense — vertical grip, high frame rate, remote-capable — and is the accessory you fit when you want to use the A-1 to chase sport, journalism or moving children around a garden.
The Data Back A
The image above shows the Data Back A, Canon's purpose-built replacement back for the A-series, designed to imprint date or sequence numbers directly onto the film at the moment of exposure. It has three knurled dials labelled YEAR, MONTH and DAY, with an OFF/ON switch and a small selector for imprint formats. It replaces the standard hinged back of the camera (you slide the old one off via a small pin and slide the new one on in its place), and it covers the AE-1, AT-1, A-1 and AE-1 Program. Electronically it's identical to Canon's Data Back F, which fits the F-1; only the shape of the casing differs (FlynnGraphics).
Underneath, the three rotary dials select the data to be imprinted — year, month, day in any of five formats — and an internal incandescent lamp briefly illuminates a small ground-glass plate at the corner of the film gate, projecting the chosen digits as a tiny light-engraved imprint in the bottom-right corner of each frame. The brightness is adjustable to suit different film speeds, which matters more than you'd think; over-exposed imprints come out as featureless blobs of orange while under-exposed ones disappear into the shadows. The Data Back A was triggered electronically via a short cable that plugged into the PC flash socket on the front of the camera (the A-1, like most pre-1980 cameras, did not have a dedicated data-back terminal on the body), which meant you couldn't easily use a non-hot-shoe flash and the data back at the same time without an extra Y-cable.
There is one delightful piece of period-piece engineering hubris baked into the Data Back A's design: the YEAR dial only goes up to 1987. Canon's engineers, designing it in 1978, presumably could not imagine that anyone would still be using a 1978 SLR — let alone a Data Back A — in the 21st century. The fix, once you reach the end of the dial, is to mentally subtract 30 from the actual year and set the dial back to 1986 or so; the Data Back FN designed for the New F-1 in 1981 inherited the same three-dial layout and the same end-of-life problem. It was not until the Data Back 70, designed for the T-70 in 1984, that Canon switched to LCD digits and finally fixed the problem for good (Mir Data Back A).
The Auto Bellows and the FD 100mm f/2.8 S.S.C.
The studio image of my A-1 mounted on the bellows is, in a sense, the most A-1 picture in the set: a camera that was designed from the outset as the hub of a serious system, sitting at the centre of one of the most elaborate close-up systems anyone made for an enthusiast SLR.
The bellows shown is Canon's Auto Bellows, a sliding dual-rail macro unit introduced in the mid-1970s and described by Canon at the time as "the hub of the Canon close-up system" (Mir Canon A-1 close-up). It consists of a long calibrated rail with two independently sliding carriages — one for the camera, one for the lens — connected by a substantial concertina bellows giving an extension of 39mm to 175mm. A third moveable carriage underneath the rail carries the tripod mount, which can be slid fore and aft to balance the whole rig once camera and lens are in place. Unscrew the front (lens) carriage, turn it through 180 degrees and reattach it, and you can mount the lens reversed for higher than life-size magnification without needing a separate Macrophoto Coupler. The complete Auto Bellows set, supplied with Canon's purpose-designed Double Cable Release, weighs 1,170 grams and is the size of a small toaster (Canon Auto Bellows manual, FlynnGraphics).
The Double Cable Release is the thing that makes the Auto Bellows genuinely automatic. It's a Y-shaped cable with two plungers operated by a single press: the shorter plunger screws into the cable-release socket on the lens carriage and stops the lens diaphragm down to its working aperture, and the longer plunger fires the shutter on the camera body itself. The whole thing operates as a single two-stage press — halfway down stops the lens down, all the way down fires the shutter — so you can compose and meter at full aperture, then stop down and fire in a single fluid action. With a standard 50mm f/3.5 macro lens the Auto Bellows gives magnifications from around 0.8× to 4×, and with the dedicated Macrophoto Lens 20mm f/3.5 or 35mm f/2.8 it goes considerably further, up to 10× life size.
The lens on the front of the bellows in the studio shot is not a dedicated macro lens but the Canon FD 100mm f/2.8 S.S.C., a chrome-nosed first-generation FD breechlock optic launched in March 1973 at 31,000 yen — an interesting and slightly underrated medium telephoto in its own right. It's a 5-element-in-5-group design (notable for being slightly unusual in having one element per group, with no cemented doublets at all), 67mm × 57mm, 360 grams, with eight diaphragm blades, an f/22 minimum aperture, a closest focusing distance of 1 metre and a 55mm filter thread (Canon Camera Museum).
The S.S.C. designation refers to Canon's Super Spectra Coating, the multicoating system Canon began applying to its higher-end FD lenses from 1973 onwards to improve flare resistance and colour accuracy. On the bellows it makes an unusually nice combination — long enough to give some working distance between the front element and the subject, fast enough at f/2.8 to make composition and focusing easy under fairly modest lighting, and (because it's an original FD breechlock lens rather than a New FD lens) it locks onto the bellows carriage via the same chrome breechlock ring that secured it to the camera body when it was new. It's also an entirely usable general-purpose telephoto on its own, with the kind of slightly soft-but-pleasant wide-open rendering that small-aperture vintage Canons do very well, and a punchier, sharper look from f/4 downwards.
The lenses
The lens fitted to the A-1 in the front three-quarter studio shot is the New FD 50mm f/1.8 — Canon's standard 50mm "kit" lens for the A-series, introduced as part of the New FD line in 1979. It's a six-element-in-four-group Gauss-derivative design, 50mm × 35mm, 170 grams, with a 52mm filter thread and a minimum focusing distance of 0.6m. It's a compact, light, very capable lens that was sold by the millions on AE-1s, A-1s and AE-1 Programs through the late 1970s and 1980s, and which still makes an excellent first-roll-of-film lens for anyone picking up an FD-mount body today — sharp from wide open, well-controlled chromatic aberration, and bokeh that ranges from neutral to mildly busy depending on the background. I have written about this lens in more detail elsewhere; on this body it's mostly here to demonstrate what the standard kit looked like in 1978.
The lens that actually took the sample frame at the end of this article is much more interesting: the New FD 135mm f/2. This is one of Canon's genuinely great FD-era lenses — a fast medium telephoto with a 5-group, 6-element optical construction, an 8-bladed automatic diaphragm, a 72mm filter thread, a minimum focusing distance of 1.3m and a substantial 660-gram weight. It carries Canon's S.S.C. (Super Spectra) multicoating, the same coating system used on the higher-end FD primes from 1973 onwards, but is housed in the slightly newer 1980-era New FD body with a built-in pull-out lens hood (Mir 135mm).
It is, by reputation and in use, a magic lens. Wide open it has the classic dual-personality character that the best fast vintage telephotos seem to develop in collective myth — slightly soft and dreamy at f/2 with low-contrast highlights and a tendency towards flare, then sharpening up dramatically at f/2.8 with proper bite and well-controlled contrast. The combination of 135mm focal length, f/2 aperture and modest minimum focus distance makes it an exceptional portrait lens at distances from about 1.5m out to infinity, and it's also one of the few fast 135s of the era that can hold its own as a stage or low-light reportage lens.
It was big and heavy by 135mm standards (the lighter f/2.8 and f/3.5 New FD 135s sold in much greater volume), and was the most expensive of the three FD 135s by some distance — but the f/2 aperture and the optical character that came with it have given it a long second life on modern mirrorless bodies via simple adapter rings, and clean copies now command $300-$400 even when not adapted (FoxTail Shop). My copy lives on the A-1 most of the time, and the kind of compressed-perspective head-and-shoulders portraits it produces are precisely the reason this combination is worth keeping in working order.
A trip to Saffron Walden, November 2007
The sample frame above was taken on a family day out to Audley End House & Gardens, just outside Saffron Walden in north-west Essex, in November 2007. We had driven up to spend the day with our friends Ruth & Nathan and their daughters Charlotte, Melissa and Juliet. Gabriel was just a baby at the time, but the three older boys (Rafferty, Monty and Milo) had grown up with the girls, and they all spent most of the afternoon hurtling around the grounds together in a small mixed pack. By the time the picture was taken, with hazy early-afternoon light filling the scene, they had discovered this lichen-covered stone bridge over the River Cam and decided collectively that the most interesting thing in the entire estate was whatever was happening in the water beneath it (English Heritage).
Audley End itself is one of the great early Jacobean houses in England — completed in 1614 for Sir Thomas Howard, first Earl of Suffolk, on the site of a dissolved Benedictine abbey, originally built at a scale grand enough to host King James I and so structurally overambitious that successive generations of the Howard family have spent the past four centuries slowly demolishing parts of it. The park around it was redesigned by Capability Brown in the 1760s, the river was widened, the formal Jacobean parterres were swept away and replaced with the open lawn-and-tree landscape that survives today, and Robert Adam added the ornamental bridge, a Grecian temple and a teahouse along the river. The whole thing has been in the care of English Heritage since the late 1980s and is one of the best-maintained large country estates in the south-east (Wikipedia).
The film was Ilford XP2 Super 400 — Ilford's C-41-processed black-and-white chromogenic film, which gives the slightly warm-toned, fine-grained, slightly-flat-shadowed look that's visible across all the lower midtones in the frame. The lens was the New FD 135mm f/2 set somewhere around f/4 — fast enough to handle the November light, narrow enough to get all six faces just inside the depth of field, and long enough to keep me out of the way of whatever underwater drama was being investigated.
What it's like to own one now
The A-1 is, in 2026, an absolutely lovely camera to use. The all-black body and the slightly intimidating multi-function controls give it a presence that the AE-1 doesn't quite manage; the red LED viewfinder display feels genuinely futuristic in a way that few film cameras do; the Motor Drive MA, fitted, turns it into a serious tool with proper weight and balance; and the Auto Bellows, fitted with a half-decent macro lens, turns it into a perfectly capable close-up rig that will compete on quality with most modern setups.
Used prices have crept up over the past five or six years — clean working bodies are now £150 to £250 depending on condition, motor drives another £80 to £150, the Auto Bellows around £80 to £120 — but the whole system is still genuinely affordable, the lenses are abundant and cheap (the New FD 50/1.8 in particular is one of the great bargains of film photography), and parts and repair expertise are still reasonably easy to come by.
If you buy one, listen for the Canon Cough on the first frame; if it's there, factor £80 or so for a service into the price. Make sure all five exposure modes work as expected through the AT dial. Check that the viewfinder LED display lights up cleanly across all six digits (a missing segment is usually a contact issue and is repairable, but worth knowing about). And don't be put off by the slight learning curve on the controls — the AT dial felt strange to me for about half a roll of film, and then it didn't.
