Olympus µ[mju:]-II
The Olympus µ[mju:]-II — pronounced "mew-two", spelled half a dozen different ways across the world's marketing materials, and known to most of its North American owners as the Stylus Epic — is one of the most quietly important small cameras ever made. It launched in 1997, sold somewhere between three-and-a-half and ten million units depending on whose accounting you trust, won European Compact Camera of the Year 1997-98, and was the camera that briefly persuaded a generation of working photographers that the future of casual photography was a small slippery black bar of plastic with a sliding clamshell cover, a single small lens behind a sliding door, and an autofocus system that did all of the thinking for you (Wikipedia).
In our family it served the rather more specific purpose of being my wife Vanessa's camera through almost the entire formative decade of our married life, from setting up our first household in Canterbury in the late 1990s, through our wedding, through the birth of our first three sons and most of their early childhood, before being slowly and gracefully retired in the early 2010s when she finally accepted that the iPhone 5 was good enough to replace it.
The sample frame at the bottom of this article is the very first photograph I ever took of my eldest son Rafferty — taken on this camera, by me, perhaps two minutes after he was born at the Kent & Canterbury Hospital in 2001. The Mju II was the camera we had in the hospital bag that day, partly because it was small enough to fit in a hospital bag and partly because Vanessa never went anywhere without it. The frame is properly exposed, the autofocus locked on the right thing, and the camera produced a perfectly competent 6×4” print from the Boots one-hour processing service on Canterbury High Street. It is, in retrospect, exactly the kind of single irreplaceable photograph that this camera was built for.
A short note on the name
Before going any further it's worth addressing the camera's name, which is one of the more peculiar branding exercises of the late twentieth century. The camera was sold under three quite different names in different parts of the world:
In Japan, Asia and most of Europe it was sold as the Olympus µ[mju:]-II. The "µ" is the lowercase Greek letter mu — the same letter that physicists use to denote the SI prefix for "micro" (one-millionth) and which has the IPA pronunciation [mjuː] in modern Greek, hence the square-bracketed pronunciation guide that Olympus helpfully printed on every box. The intended reading is simply "mew" — as in the noise a cat makes — and the "II" indicates that this is the second generation of the µ family, succeeding the original µ[mju:] of 1991 (Wikipedia, Olympus Global).
In North America the camera was sold as the Olympus Stylus Epic. Olympus had decided that "µ[mju:]-II" was too aggressively Japanese-engineering-department for American consumers, who would presumably find a small unpronounceable Greek letter on the front of their camera off-putting; the "Stylus" branding had been used in the US since 1991 for the predecessor (sold in Asia as the µ[mju:]), and the "Epic" suffix was added for the 1997 generation. In Canada the camera was variously sold as the Stylus Epic or the Stylus Epic DLX (the latter being a slightly upmarket variant with a date back and a panorama-mode mask) (Casual Photophile).
And in casual usage almost everyone — including Olympus's own marketing in some territories — simply called it the mju II or mju 2 or mjuII, sometimes with the colon, usually without, occasionally with a hyphen and occasionally without. There is no genuinely correct spelling, and the camera community has been arguing about which form is most authentic for nearly three decades. For the purposes of this article I'll mostly use "Mju II", which has the merit of being typeable on a normal keyboard.
A short history of the Mju lineage
The Mju line begins not with the Mju at all, but with a camera that came nearly two decades earlier — the Olympus XA of 1979, designed by the legendary Olympus designer Yoshihisa Maitani. The XA was a tiny clamshell-cased rangefinder with a 35mm f/2.8 Zuiko lens, no need for a lens cap, no need for a case, properly pocketable in a way that no 35mm rangefinder had previously been, and — almost uniquely for the period — manually focused with a small thumb-wheel rather than autofocus. It was a runaway success, sold by the million through the 1980s, and established a Maitani-school design lineage at Olympus that valued ruthless miniaturisation and a smooth, button-free outer form over the cluttered control aesthetics of the Japanese SLR (Casual Photophile).
The XA's spiritual descendant — and the first member of what would become the Mju family — appeared in 1991 as the Olympus µ[mju:] (sold in the US as the Olympus Infinity Stylus). It was designed by Tatsuya Suzuki rather than by Maitani directly, though Suzuki acknowledged the XA as a primary design influence; gone was the rangefinder, replaced by a three-element 35mm f/3.5 Zuiko lens with autofocus driven by an active infrared system, and gone too was the manual film advance and the manually-set ISO, both replaced by motorised mechanisms and DX-coded automatic detection (Wikipedia). The Mju I sold roughly 5 million units through the 1990s and established Olympus as the dominant force in serious-but-pocketable 35mm point-and-shoots (Rangefinder Cameras).
The Mju II, released in 1997, was the engineering refinement of that fundamental concept. The headline upgrade was the lens — Olympus replaced the three-element f/3.5 of the Mju I with a brighter and considerably more sophisticated four-element four-group 35mm f/2.8 Zuiko design, multi-coated, and almost universally regarded as one of the sharpest fixed-lens compact lenses anyone made. The autofocus system was upgraded from a basic three-step active infrared AF to a much more capable multi-beam active AF system with over 400 focus steps, which dramatically improved both focusing speed and accuracy, particularly in low light. The body was given proper environmental sealing with rubber gaskets around all the major seams, making it splash-proof if not actually waterproof. The flash was given six fully-programmable modes (auto, red-eye reduction, off, fill-in, night scene, and red-eye reduction night scene), and the metering system was upgraded to switchable two-zone or spot metering. The whole thing was housed in a body 108 × 59 × 35mm and weighing 135 grams without battery, which is to say roughly the size and weight of a deck of cards plus a small chocolate bar (EMULSIVE).
The Mju II was followed by a substantial family of related cameras through the late 1990s and early 2000s — the Mju II Zoom 80/115/140/170 with various zoom lenses, the Mju III of 2001 with refinements to the autofocus and a new body shape, the Mju IV/V/VI through the early 2000s, and an APS-format variant — but the original fixed-lens Mju II remained the design icon, and the one that almost everyone now means when they say "Mju II". By the time Olympus discontinued the line in the mid-2000s, total Mju-family production was somewhere around 20 million cameras worldwide (Utah Film Photography).
What's inside
The Mju II's specification reads, with hindsight, like an inventory of every feature that a sophisticated point-and-shoot camera might need and none that it doesn't:
Lens: 35mm f/2.8 Zuiko, four elements in four groups, multi-coated, with a minimum focus distance of 0.35m (about 14 inches), behind a sliding cover that opens automatically when the clamshell is opened. Shutter: Programmed electronic, 4 seconds to 1/1000 second, with EV range from EV 1 to EV 17 at ISO 100. Aperture range: f/2.8 (wide open) to f/11 (stopped down), set automatically by the metering system in combination with the shutter speed; there is no manual aperture control.
Viewfinder: Real-image albada-type optical viewfinder with autofocus crosshair, parallax correction marks, AF confirmation LED (green) and flash-ready LED (orange). Autofocus: Active multi-beam infrared AF, 400+ focus steps from 0.35m to infinity, with focus lock on half-press of the shutter. Metering: Two-zone evaluative metering as standard, switchable to spot metering by pressing both rear buttons simultaneously. Flash: Built-in pop-up unit with six programmable modes — automatic, red-eye reduction, suppressed (off), fill-in, night scene (slow sync, up to 4 seconds), and red-eye reduction night scene. Flash working range at ISO 100 is 0.35m to 4.1m; at ISO 400, 0.35m to 8.2m.
Film: Standard 35mm DX-coded, automatic ISO setting from ISO 50 to ISO 3200, with manual fallback to ISO 100 for non-DX-coded film. Film loading: Drop the cartridge in, align the leader at the red mark, close the back — automatic loading to frame one. Automatic single-frame advance after each exposure, automatic rewind at end of roll, with a small recessed manual mid-roll rewind button on the back (must be pressed with a pen tip) for those occasions when you want to swap films partway through. Power: Single CR123A 3-volt lithium battery, rated for around 20 rolls of 24-exposure film, more if you don't use the flash.
Dimensions: 108 × 59 × 35mm, 135 grams without battery, 139 grams with. Build: Polycarbonate shell over a metal internal chassis, with rubber gaskets at every seam giving genuine splash resistance (Olympus carefully did not market it as waterproof, and you should not under any circumstances submerge it).
The combination of these features makes the camera what its enormous fan base now considers it to be: an essentially unbreakable, intelligent-enough, pocket-portable little device that produces sharp, well-exposed 35mm negatives under almost any conditions short of total darkness or actual underwater immersion, with no need for the photographer to think about anything except composition and shutter timing. The dynamic range available from the lens, the metering and the autofocus system together is essentially identical to what a serious SLR with a decent prime lens would produce in the same circumstances, but in a package that genuinely fits in a coat pocket. In 1997 nobody else was making anything quite like it; in 2026, nobody is making anything like it at all, which is one of the reasons used prices have climbed steeply over the past decade.
The controls are pretty simple — it’s designed as a point-and-shoot after all. On the front the Olympus-branded sliding clamshell lens cover is the dominant feature, which slides back to reveal the centrally positioned lens, as well as a few other features. Uppermost, the flash, and below it the small red self-timer LED on the left. Next to that, barely visible, are a pair of dark tinted windows for the AF and the viewfinder. Below those, two small round holes for the remote-control sensor and the light sensor. All of these structures are covered up and protected when the clamshell cover is closed.
The silver, oval, shutter release button is only feature on the top of the camera. On the back, at the upper left (when viewed from behind) there is a Panorama Mode lever, that slides a mask in front of the film gate to give panorama-shaped images, but sacrificing a lot of film real-estate in the process. Just to the right of this, the viewfinder window. The film door covers the whole back of the camera, and hinges on the right, with the door latch on the left side. There’s a small rectangular LCD centrally, and below it a pair of buttons for setting Flash Mode, Self-Timer and Remote Control. To the right of the LCD, a pair or tiny buttons for setting the Time & Date function, and just below those, the recessed fim rewind button.
The base of the camera carries the serial number and Olympus stamp, as well as the tripod mount on the far right, with the latch for the battery compartment next to it.
The lens
The 35mm f/2.8 Zuiko lens behind the small sliding cover is what every review of this camera ends up praising, and is the single component most responsible for the Mju II's reputation. It's a four-element-in-four-groups design, multi-coated, with no cemented doublets — a genuinely sophisticated piece of optical engineering for what was, by 1997 standards, a fairly inexpensive consumer point-and-shoot. The aperture is a fixed two-blade diaphragm that operates as a step-down mechanism rather than a true iris (it has a small set of fixed openings rather than a continuously-variable iris), which is one of the few cost-saving compromises in the design, and explains why the bokeh wide open is competent rather than spectacular (Lens Lurker).
What the lens does — and does extraordinarily well — is deliver sharpness, contrast and corner-to-corner consistency that meaningfully exceeds what any other compact 35mm point-and-shoot of its era managed. It substantially out-resolves the contemporary Yashica T4 and Pentax Espio, holds its own optically against the much more expensive Contax T2 and Ricoh GR1, and produces results that genuinely don't embarrass themselves when compared with a 50mm prime on an SLR. Combined with the multi-beam AF system's accuracy at f/2.8, this means that on a roll of decent colour film — Kodak Gold 200, Fuji Superia 400 — the Mju II will produce drugstore prints that look like they came out of a much more expensive camera, which is precisely the reputation that has driven its used prices from £30-£50 fifteen years ago to £200-£300 in 2026.
The lens is also responsible for the camera's single best ergonomic feature: because it sits behind a sliding cover that opens automatically when you open the clamshell, there is no lens cap to lose, no front element to accidentally finger-smear when you take the camera out of a pocket, no separate operation needed to ready the camera for shooting beyond sliding the clamshell open with a thumb. From clamshell-closed-in-pocket to first-photograph-on-film is approximately two seconds, with no chance of forgetting an intermediate step. This sounds trivial; it is not.
Rafferty’s Arrival, June 2001
The image above was taken in the delivery suite of the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, perhaps two minutes after my eldest son Rafferty was born. We had been living in Canterbury for a couple of years at that point, in a small Victorian terraced house close to the city centre, and Vanessa had been my wife for not quite a year. The day had begun early, and had run its long, slow, unpredictable course into the evening, ending in the kind of clinical anti-climax that hospital births somehow always produce: a quiet, professional, almost matter-of-fact moment where a midwife and a paediatrician took an extremely small wet baby across to a resuscitaire under bright clinical lighting, checked him over, weighed him, wrapped him in two cotton hospital towels and a piece of green knitted blanket of unknown provenance, and pronounced him perfectly healthy.
The Mju II was, as ever, in Vanessa's bag. As soon as the paediatrician had finished, and Rafferty had been temporarily set down on the resuscitaire while paperwork was filled in, I took the camera out, slid the clamshell open, half-pressed for autofocus on his face, and pressed the shutter. The frame shows him lying on a white hospital towel on top of the resuscitaire pad, with the paediatrician's yellow nitrile-gloved hand still resting on the top of his head, anchoring him so he wouldn't roll. He is — incongruously, given how new he is — already extremely composed: eyes closed, mouth slightly open, dark wet hair plastered to his head, hands curled near his chin in the universal first-minute-of-life posture that every newborn seems to adopt. The paediatrician's blue surgical scrubs and the loop of his lanyard are visible at the top of the frame; the rest of the scene is a clean mid-key composition of cream and white towels and pale skin against the darker background of the delivery room.
The film was Kodak Royal Gold 400 — the premium consumer 35mm colour negative film that Boots and most other British high-street processors stocked alongside the cheaper Kodak Gold and Fuji Superia lines in the early 2000s, and the standard choice for anybody who wanted slightly finer grain and slightly better skin tones than the bargain emulsions could manage without quite paying for proper professional Portra (Ted's Images, Kodak). It produced the slightly warm, slightly saturated, fairly fine-grained look that's visible in the frame, with reasonably well-controlled colour rendition under the mixed clinical lighting of the delivery suite. The film was processed the next morning at the Boots One-Hour Photo on Canterbury High Street, which had — as Boots branches all across Britain did through the late 1990s and early 2000s — a small dedicated minilab room behind the photographic counter, with a Noritsu or Kodak machine that could take a 35mm film cartridge, develop it in C-41 chemistry, scan the negatives, print them on Kodak Royal paper, and hand the whole lot back to you in a paper envelope in just over an hour for somewhere between £6 and £10.
What it's like to own one now
The Mju II in 2026 is one of the most peculiar cameras to write about with a straight face, because almost everything about its current situation is the opposite of what was true when it was new. New in 1997, it cost between $200 and $400 USD (£130-£250 in Britain), was widely advertised, sat alongside dozens of competing pocket-sized 35mm autofocus point-and-shoots from Canon, Nikon, Minolta, Pentax, Konica, Ricoh and Yashica, and was used as a casual everyday camera by people who didn't think much about the brand. In 2026, used examples in working condition routinely sell for £200 to £300, sometimes more, mint examples in original packaging fetch £400-£600, the camera has become an Instagram-and-TikTok cult object among photographers who weren't born when it was launched, and Olympus has not made a film camera of any kind in over fifteen years (A Fist Full of Bolts).
What this means in practice is that buying one in 2026 is a slightly fraught exercise. The price-to-quality ratio is now, by most reasonable measures, terrible — the same money will buy you a Yashica T4 or a Konica Big Mini that produces almost identical results, or an Olympus XA from the 1980s that produces results that are arguably better still. The Mju II's f/2.8 lens is genuinely excellent, but the f/3.5 lens on the Mju I is barely a stop slower and the camera is otherwise nearly identical, and Mju Is can still occasionally be found for £80-£120. If you have a Mju II already — as I do, and as we have had in the family since the late 1990s — keep it, look after it, change the battery every few years, and treat it as the genuinely capable everyday camera it always was. If you're looking to buy one from scratch in 2026, my honest advice is to consider whether your real reason for wanting one is the camera itself or the Instagram aesthetic associated with it, and to budget accordingly.
If you do buy one, the failure mode you most need to worry about is electronic flash board failure — the small circuit board behind the flash unit is prone to deteriorating with age, and a Mju II whose flash has stopped working is more or less unrepairable economically (the parts are no longer available and the labour cost of board-level diagnosis exceeds the value of the camera). Check the flash on every flash mode before buying. The other thing to verify is the clamshell mechanism, which can stiffen with age or with grit getting into the slide rails, and which is critical to the entire camera's operation: a sticky clamshell means an unreliable camera. The rubber gaskets around the back door also degrade with age and can lose their splash-resistance properties; this is harder to test on the shop floor but worth knowing about.
The CR123A battery is, gratifyingly, still widely available in 2026 (lithium batteries having outlasted essentially every camera designed around them), the camera takes essentially any 35mm film cartridge made between 1997 and the present day, and a properly-working Mju II will produce excellent results on whatever film you put through it, just as it always did.
