Tuesday. Another clear, mild, sunny day. No work for me, which makes for a gentler dive back into the rat race than a straight five-day grind would have been. It’s Vanessa’s last day of the school year, so her long summer holiday has begun, and this means she will usually return home festooned with gifts from grateful urchins and their parents.

It’s also our wedding anniversary today — twenty-six years, or as V likes to put it, longer than she would have gotten for murder. She says it affectionately, and I will keep telling myself that. I happily occupied myself with photography and writing; Raff went to the gym, and Dash chilled out with a book he’s reading and a spot of gaming with his friends. It was a lovely peaceful day; in the evening, we ordered Fireaway pizzas to celebrate.

Gabriel has been sending amazing photos from his travels in Switzerland — today he took the Bernina Express through the Alps, a four-hour round trip from St Moritz to Tirano in Northern Italy, with incredible views of glaciers, mountain lakes, viaducts and alpine villages. He’s having fun.
